An elegant French officer’s sabre dating from the Directoire-Consulate period, circa 1795-1804, of a distinctly refined form associated with a senior officer. The sabre features a strongly curved single-edged blade with a graceful profile and a richly decorated surface. The gilt brass hilt incorporates an elegant knuckle guard and finely shaped grip, while the grip itself appears to retain its original wire-bound covering. The accompanying scabbard is particularly striking, featuring elaborate gilt-brass mounts and ornamental decoration. The combination of the richly decorated hilt and highly finished scabbard indicates a privately commissioned or presentation-quality officer’s weapon rather than a standard-issue military sabre. The restrained yet elaborate aesthetic is characteristic of the transitional period between the French Revolution and the establishment of the First Empire, when officers’ weapons could display considerable individual taste and luxury.
