Description
A fine French officer’s sword knot (dragonne) dating from the 19th century, made in metallic cord with a substantial woven bullion tassel.
The dragonne was worn attached to the hilt of an officer’s sword or sabre. Originally intended to secure the weapon to the wrist, by the 19th century the officer’s dragonne had also become an important element of military dress, with its materials and construction reflecting rank and regulation.
This example retains its intricately braided cord, sliding knot and full bullion tassel, showing the elaborate textile workmanship characteristic of French military accoutrements of the period.
