Description
A fine Dutch light cavalry trooper’s sabre, Model M1813 No. 1 (LC1), based upon the British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Sabre.
This model was ordered in England, 1813–1814 for the newly formed Dutch Army following the restoration of Dutch independence. It equipped Dutch light cavalry during the Waterloo campaign of 1815 and remained in service afterwards, including during the Ten Days’ Campaign of 1831.
The sabre retains its characteristic strongly curved blade, simple iron stirrup hilt and steel scabbard with two suspension rings. The numbers of the sabre and scabbard do not match, consistent with these components having historically been stored separately.
Of particular interest is its documented provenance: formerly held by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and deaccessioned in 2020, when it was sold through Venduehuis der Notarissen in The Hague.
A superbly preserved example of an important Dutch cavalry pattern closely associated with the Waterloo era.
