A Passion for History

Built on Experience

Red Lancer Antiques was founded by Han van den Bosch, who has spent more than thirty years studying and collecting edged weapons of the 18th and 19th centuries. Known for many years under the name Marc Marbot as an author, blogger and contributor to specialist forums, his particular field of interest is the Napoleonic Wars and the wider military history of the 19th century.

Over the years, this knowledge has been called upon by private collectors, auction houses, historians and museums. An extensive research archive has been assembled along the way, including a database of more than one million photographs documenting edged weapons and antique firearms offered and sold over the past twenty-five years. This is complemented by a substantial private reference library and published articles in specialist antique-arms literature.

For us, the value of an historical object lies not only in its rarity or appearance, but in understanding what it is, where it belongs and what its details can tell us.

Knowledge

for the collector

Buying antique arms requires a discerning eye. Variations in construction, markings, restoration and originality can make a considerable difference to both the historical importance and value of a piece.

Red Lancer therefore offers independent advice to collectors considering an acquisition. For an agreed fee, we can examine a prospective purchase and offer our opinion before you commit to it. Whether you are an established collector or considering an important addition to a collection, a second pair of experienced eyes can prevent an expensive mistake.

We can also advise on conservation and restoration. Where specialist work is required, we work with a highly regarded international restorer of historical arms, ensuring that important pieces receive the care and respect they deserve.

Buying, selling & finding

The collection offered through Red Lancer is regularly updated with carefully selected historical arms, militaria and antiques.

We can also assist owners wishing to sell a quality piece or collection, either through direct acquisition or brokerage where appropriate.

Collectors searching for a particular model, maker or scarce variation are invited to contact us. With decades of accumulated references, contacts and market knowledge, we may be able to locate an example on your behalf.

Our involvement with historical arms has always extended beyond buying and selling. Research, discussion and the exchange of knowledge remain an important part of Red Lancer. Through The Bulletin, we will regularly share discoveries, observations and information of interest to fellow collectors and enthusiasts.

We welcome your questions, observations and enquiries.
