A fine French flintlock officer’s pistol, dating from the Premier Empire period, circa 1800–1815. The pistol features a finely shaped walnut stock with chequered grip, an elegant iron-mounted flintlock mechanism with characteristic swan-neck cock, and a long, slender barrel. The restrained yet refined construction is typical of privately commissioned French officer’s arms of the period, produced outside the standardised military patterns. The barrel carries a decorative inscription which reads “Vust à Fontainebleau”, suggesting an association with a gunsmith or arms maker based in Fontainebleau. The exact reading of the signature is somewhat obscured by the decorative script and should therefore be regarded as attributed rather than definitive. The combination of its elegant proportions, quality of construction and Fontainebleau association makes this an attractive example of a French officer’s sidearm from the Napoleonic era.
