Description
An impressive original portrait of a captain of the French 13th Regiment of Line Infantry, dating from the period of Napoleon’s First Empire. 65×74,5 format
The officer is depicted in uniform with gold epaulettes and wearing his decoration, rendered with particularly fine attention to the details of his dress and appearance. Especially striking is the carefully observed First Empire hairstyle, making the portrait an excellent visual record of an officer of the period as well as an attractive work in its own right.
The painting underwent restoration, probably during the mid-20th century, including relining of the canvas. It is now preserved in superb condition. The black and gilt frame is a later addition, sympathetically chosen to complement the painting.
A large, finely detailed portrait with strong Napoleonic character.
