Description

A rare matched pair of French officer’s flintlock pistols by M. Huvart of Verdun, originating from the third quarter of the 18th century and subsequently modified, probably during the French Revolutionary period.

The pistols were adapted in the style of the French Model 1763/66 military pistol, while retaining the more refined character appropriate to privately owned officer’s arms. Both feature engraved lockplates, brass barrel bands and mounts, and full walnut stocks. Their unusual configuration and survival as a pair make them a particularly interesting example of arms adapted during a period of considerable military and political upheaval.

The pair was professionally cleaned following its discovery by Herman Prummel, a specialist restorer who has undertaken restoration work for major museum collections including the Hermitage and the Rijksmuseum.
