Description
A rare French infantry trooper’s sabre, Model AN IX, dating from the Consular period and continuing in service during Napoleon’s First Empire.
The curved blade bears the important Klingenthal spine inscription “Manufacture Nationale du Klingenthal, Coulaux Frères Entrepreneurs”, identifying production at the celebrated Klingenthal arms manufactory under the Coulaux brothers. The blade also carries control marks associated with Levavasseur (1791–1803) and Mouton (1783–1809).
With its simple brass stirrup hilt and distinctly curved blade, this is an honest military example of a weapon carried during one of the most turbulent periods of French history. Sabres of this model saw service throughout the Revolutionary and early Napoleonic campaigns, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to find.
