Description

A particularly attractive French light cavalry officer’s sabre of the Model AN XI type, dating from the period c. 1815–1830.

The sabre is distinguished by its superb blue-and-gilt blade, richly decorated with gilt military and ornamental motifs against the deep blued ground. The blade was probably manufactured in Solingen, an important centre for the production of high-quality blades for the European market.

The brass-mounted hilt retains an attractive untouched patina. It is accompanied by a brass scabbard which fits the sabre well, although it is believed not to be original to the sword. The scabbard also shows an old period repair. These points are reflected in the asking price.

Despite the associated scabbard, the quality and preservation of the blue-and-gilt blade make this a highly desirable French officer’s sabre from the post-Napoleonic period.
