Description

A rare Dutch infantry officer’s sabre from the Batavian Commonwealth, dating from the period of Grand Pensionary Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck.

The sabre retains its original white buff leather carrying strap, an especially attractive and uncommon survival.

According to documentation from the former collection of H. Lieffers, the sabre was carried by an officer of Schimmelpenninck’s bodyguard. This attribution is based on notes preserved with the piece and should therefore be regarded as documented provenance rather than independently verified service history.

Schimmelpenninck served as Grand Pensionary of the Batavian Commonwealth from 1805 to 1806, immediately before the establishment of the Kingdom of Holland.

A distinctive and historically interesting Dutch officer’s sabre with strong provenance and original accoutrement.
